The 2013 First Bus Handbook is now available and includes all the fleet as at the start of March 2013. FirstGroup plc is the UK?s largest surface transportation company with a turnover of over six billion pounds, employing over 125000 staff in Europe and North America. First runs one in five of all local bus services in the UK, and these currently carry some 2.5 million passengers per day in more than forty major towns and cities from Aberdeen to Penzance, with services also operated in Ireland. Full details of First?s operations can be found at www.firstgroup.com. First is also the UK?s largest train operator, with four passenger franchises: First Great Western, First Capital Connect, First TransPennine Express and First ScotRail. First also owns Hull Trains, an ?open access? operator. Between them these companies operate one quarter of the UK passenger rail network with a balanced portfolio of intercity, commuter and regional services, and carry over 280 million passengers per year. The Croydon Tramlink operated by First on behalf of Transport for London carries 28 million passengers per year. First?s UK Bus operations are going through a period of consolidation at present with the emphasis being on development of the core major urban markets. In 2012 and early 2013 the operations in Wigan, Chester and the Wirral were sold to Stagecoach and those in Redditch and Kidderminster to Rotala. In London, Northumberland Park depot and its operations were sold to Go Ahead group. This has enabled First to focus its attention and investment in the remainder of its operations. Under the leadership of Tim O?Toole, the former head of London Underground Ltd appointed to head First in 2010 on the retirement of former Chief Executive Moir Lockhead, the Group anticipates a bright and exciting future.
